What is a Street Team Survey?
A street team survey is a method of engaging community members, designed to gather perspectives via face-to-face conversations. They allow a team to reach a relatively large number of people from a variety of locations over a set period of time.
The materials below were created by Overlap Associates as part of Aging By Design, an initiative of the Health Foundation for Western and Central New York.
Read the overview, adapt the survey, and get in touch with clients and community. Street team surveys can be completed in-person, on a video call, or over the phone.
Street Team Pro-Tips
The Street Teams approach uses a simple survey tool to help structure conversations with clients or community members. Try face-to-face interactions, video calls, and phone calls.
If you are planning to meet people face-to-face, remember these pro-tips:
Work in pairs (1 interviewer, 1 recorder)
Be friendly and genuine; people usually like being asked their opinion/about themselves
Let them know how you’re planning to use the information they share
Silence can be useful, but if it gets too quiet, try “Anything else?”
Don’t record personal information
Let people answer whatever and however they want
After the conversation, take a few moments to go over your notes - did you get everything?
Survey Template
This street team survey template was designed to be used with older adults and caregivers as part of Aging By Design.
The questions and format can be adapted in collaboration with a few of your own clients or community members. What would they like to share about themselves?
Putting clients, customers, community members at the heart of your conversations will help generate better surveys, better information, better ideas, and better programs and services.
